Topic: Proliferation of Lethal Autonomous Weapons (LAWs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is tasked with addressing some of the most pressing security challenges facing the international community. In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, the proliferation of Lethal Autonomous Weapons (LAWs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has emerged as a significant threat to global peace and stability. This committee will explore the implications of these technologies and seek to establish frameworks to regulate their development and use.
The advent of LAWs and UAVs represents a transformative shift in modern warfare. LAWs, which can select and engage targets without human intervention, pose profound ethical and security dilemmas. Their potential to operate independently raises concerns about accountability, the risk of unintended escalation, and the erosion of international humanitarian law. Similarly, UAVs, commonly known as drones, have revolutionized surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeted strikes. While they offer strategic advantages, their widespread use by state and non-state actors has sparked debates about sovereignty, civilian casualties, and the proliferation of technology to malicious actors.
Delegates in DISEC will confront complex and multifaceted challenges. Balancing the strategic advantages of LAWs and UAVs with the need for ethical oversight and international stability will require nuanced and forward-thinking approaches. The diversity of perspectives and interests among member states will necessitate robust negotiation and consensus-building efforts.
